The Most Important Thing That Young People Should Do

Image
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a Batman exhibition that was not only fascinating but also rekindled my long-standing interest in the Dark Knight. Batman has always been a compelling character -steeped in darkness, driven by tragedy, and guided by an unwavering sense of justice. Batman's story resonates deeply with the theme of identity, particularly in the context of his complicated relationship with his son, Damian, as portrayed in the animated film Batman vs. Robin. In Batman vs. Robin, the relationship between Bruce Wayne (Batman) and his biological son, Damian, is complex and fraught with tension. Damian, like many young people, is in the midst of figuring out who he is. This process of self-discovery is difficult, made even more so by the towering expectations placed on him by his parents and grandfather. The film poignantly captures Damian's struggle to define himself in the shadow of his family's legacy- a struggle that, in many ways, mirrors our own journ...

More Income = Less Happiness?

Image
The Income Paradox: Why More Money Might Lead to Less Happiness   In a world driven by the pursuit of financial success, it's easy to assume that more income naturally leads to greater happiness. After all, money can buy comfort, security, and opportunities. However, numerous studies and real-world experiences suggest that the relationship between income and happiness is not as straightforward as it seems. In fact, more money can sometimes lead to less happiness. Here's why: 1. The Hedonic Treadmill Effect The concept of the "hedonic treadmill" describes how people quickly return to a stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative changes in their lives. When we receive a raise or land a high-paying job, the initial happiness boost is often temporary. Over time, our expectations and desires increase along with our income, leading us to seek even more wealth to maintain the same level of satisfaction. This constant chase can be exhausting and ultimately u...

We Might All Need to Think About the Three Body Problem

Image
Introduction: A New Frontier in Sci-Fi Netflix’s new series "Three Body Problem," based on the critically acclaimed novel by Liu Cixin, is not just another science fiction saga; it’s a thought-provoking narrative that delves into the complexities of physics, humanity, and extraterrestrial life. As we delve into this series, we might find that its story isn't as far-fetched as it seems. In fact, the themes and scenarios presented might be alarmingly close to our potential future.   Note: This post is not meant to worry readers. It simply highlights that the universe is more complex than it seems, and there is much we still don't understand about our world. So, the next time we fight over power, politics, religion, economy, or resources, let's remember how insignificant these arguments are in the grand scheme of things in this vast universe. The Premise: More Than Just a Mathematical Conundru m The "Three Body Problem" refers to a classical physics dilemma...

Travel is figuring out your options as you go

Image
Traveling often requires figuring out your options as you go, a realization that I recently came across in a YouTube commercial that resonated with me. Being an avid traveler, I've often wondered why being on the road makes me feel more inspired and alive. I attribute it to the excitement and thrill of making decisions on the fly, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at first. Admittedly, this can also be exhausting at times, but my travels have been some of the most inspiring moments of my life. Often, I'm inspired to make significant changes while traveling, such as reshaping my future, changing my career path, or even renovating my home. However, the sad truth is, typically only a fraction of the inspiration Stick with me once back home. Returning home to familiarity is often a drag; everything can become monotonous. I know where to catch the next bus and what I'll have for lunch. So it's safe to say that spontaneity is probably the key to rekindling ...

Has it been a year?!

Image
Wow, time sure flies! I can hardly believe that it's been over a year since my last diary entry. I always had good intentions of writing more consistently but got sidetracked by Instagram and YouTube. I'm still trying to figure out how to best link everything up and keep it all organized. Lately, I've been debating whether or not to move from Blogger to other platforms like WordPress. I know that Blogger is free and doesn't require a host like WordPress does, but sometimes I wonder if I could do more with a different platform. However, the thought of starting another blog from scratch makes me wish for an extra pair of hands😅. At least for now, I'll keep adding everything to this blog until I accumulate enough content to split into different topics. Let's be honest, this blog is a true reflection of my scattered brain with too many interests and not enough depth. There are some older posts that badly need editing, which is super time-consuming, but one day, I...

Foggy Day

Image
Throughout the day, a thick blanket of fog has enveloped everything outside, reducing visibility and creating a mysterious ambiance. It reminds me of an episode from The Crown where London was blanketed in fog for days, and the show perfectly captured the eerie, almost haunting atmosphere that foggy conditions can create. As a result, the episode has stayed with me as one of the most memorable from the series. If you find yourself having to venture outside today, please be careful and take extra precautions. Wishing you all safe and smooth journeys. Are you curious about all the hype about AI?  Try Jasper writing assistant today for free .

Are you for or against wearing masks?

Image
The debate around masking reveals divisions in our society. For some, masks limit personal freedoms. Others see them as a minor inconvenience that can protect the vulnerable. Though uncomfortable, masks primarily prevent us from unknowingly spreading COVID through droplets when talking, coughing, or sneezing. Ultimately, masking is a personal choice. But it allows us to take responsibility for not infecting others, especially as many carry COVID while asymptomatic. Wearing masks is not about fear, but care for our community. When infection rates rise, our health systems and economy suffer. Rather than mandate masks, we could appeal to people's sense of service to adopt this simple act of kindness. If protecting each other is not incentive enough, consider the hardship when jobs and lives are lost. A small discomfort on our part can prevent immense suffering for others. I choose to wear a mask in public spaces not out of fear, but in order not to spread the illness to others when I ...

Gratitude Diary Day 7: Midnight Diner

Image
Japanese drama I recently discovered Midnight Diner on Netflix, a Japanese drama with good reviews in Asia and several seasons available. Although I initially disregarded it for its plain and slow-paced appearance compared to other shows, I eventually found that viewing it requires the right reflective and calm mindset, much like sipping a good cup of Japanese tea. #MidnightDiner     Human stories Human stories form the core of this drama, with each episode featuring a different person's story and a moral waiting to be uncovered. I find the setting particularly fascinating as it features people with different aspirations, social norms, and other cultural aspects that create uniqueness and intrigue. The foreign backdrop further emphasizes characters' emotions, eliminating distractions and arguably makes this drama more engaging. It is remarkable to see how similar human emotions recur in different times and spaces without exception. Core values After watching several episodes, ...

Brazil's Sustainable Biofuel Economy: A Remarkable Achievement

Image
Brazil stands out as the world's first sustainable biofuels economy and the leader in the biofuel industry. This remarkable achievement is partly thanks to favorable circumstances, yet it is still an impressive feat. It's surprising that this isn't common knowledge. Did you know that over 50% of all cars fuels used in Brazil are produced from sugarcane-derived bio-ethanol? Although this biofuel economy may not be globally scalable, it serves as an excellent example of how new industries and technologies can emerge out of necessity when markets are shielded from direct overseas competition. In this case, imported fuel is too expensive for the Brazilian market. For those interested in learning more about the technology behind Brazil's biofuel industry, the BBC documentary "The World in 2050" is an excellent resource. It offers insight into the innovative technologies that have made Brazil a leader in the field. Recommended Book Are you curious about all the hype...

Hugo film review: A Masterpiece of Imagination and Adventure

Image
Hugo is an immersive and visually stunning film that transports viewers to the enchanting world of Paris in the 1930s. The intricate details of the trains, station, and clocks, along with the contrast of the bluish winter and warm yellow lights, create a mesmerizing backdrop for the story. The warm human interactions and relationships between characters add a depth of emotion that makes the film truly special. The characters in Hugo are expertly crafted, each with their own unique personality and backstory. Through subtle repetition and clever use of character traits, viewers are able to get to know the characters on a deeper level with just a hint of familiarity. It's a testament to the skillful storytelling of director Martin Scorsese and the talented cast. The story itself is captivating, exploring themes such as the purpose of life, love, friendship, family, ambition, the whims of fate, career, magic, and dreams. There's so much to think about and reflect upon long after th...

Recommended film: Suffragette

Image
Suffragette, the 2015 British historical period drama film, is a powerful depiction of women's suffrage in the United Kingdom. Directed by Sarah Gavron and written by Abi Morgan, it is a must-see movie that inspires and educates about the struggles of previous generations. It stands alongside other inspiring political films like Milk, Pride, and The Post, which serve as reminders that many of the privileges we take for granted today, such as equality and freedom of the press, are the result of hard-fought battles won by our predecessors. Suffragette is a testament to the resilience and determination of women who paved the way for future generations to enjoy fundamental rights and freedoms. The film portrays the life of a typical English working-class woman during a time when fighting for women's rights was considered taboo and even criminal. It's hard to imagine the struggles and sacrifices these women endured to bring about change in society. Personally, I found the film t...

Finding a NHS dentist

Image
For foreigners who have to relocate to the UK for whatever reason, navigating through the British healthcare system can be a bewildering experience. In the United Kingdom most health services are free of charge for British residents, provided under the National Health Service (the NHS). If you are only visiting and do not meet the residency rules, you will now have a cover the cost yourself, so make sure you have suitable insurance coverage before you travel. Here is a video explaining how the NHS works: If all that sounds too complicated, that's because it is.  Luckily  however, it will go a long way just by understanding some of the basic services: NHS services includes Primary Care (General Practice GP, Walk-in Centres, Pharmacies, Dentist, Opticians), Secondary Care (hospital services, specialists), Emergency Services (A&E), Mental Health services and a wide range of Community Based services.  Most Primary Care services you can access di...

QR codes for the homeless - Greater Change

Image
Homelessness is a growing problem in some of our major cities. The problem of donating to the homeless was one of the things I have wondered about recently. Local authorities tend to take the view that people can access available services if they need them, so there are no reasons why someone should be rough-sleeping in the streets. They also urge people not to give cash to the homeless directly, as it will keep rough-sleepers in the streets rather than encouraging homeless people to find help from statutory or voluntary sector services. In reality, the system is far from perfect and it's not always that simple. Without opening a discussion on all the reasons why someone may still end up in the streets, I was wondering about the act of donating cash itself. How do you distinguish between people that genuinely need your help and the professional beggars? How do you stop your money being spent on cigarettes or drugs? These thoughts usually put me off giving any money at all, I w...

Board Game Review 2: Railways of the World

Image
The second game we ended up playing at a different dinner party last weekend was very different to Balderdash. And it took a lot longer to play. Railways of the World is a strategy game. You have to build railway tracks to connect up cities and gradually build up your railway empire. You decide where the lines should go and you gain points every time other players use your railway line. There are many variations to this game, and very quickly every player will emerge with their own unique strategy on how to play. Some will borrow heavily to build quickly, some will focus on a handful of strategic cities, some will look for loopholes and bonus points by completing certain events.  The game is very well made and a lot of fun to play. Sadly, this doesn't seem to be available on Amazon. If you are a retailer selling this game it might be an idea to seize this opportunity and open an online shop! Good points about the game : A sense of achievement to see you gra...

A glimpse into the future

Image
Even though most of the technologies demonstrated here are already achievable, to have them so seamlessly integrated into our daily lives still seem rather futuristic. Would this be 5-10 years from now?

Biohacking?

Image
The idea of implanted technology like RFID tags makes me squeamish and reminds me too much of dystopian fiction like the Hunger Games. However, many biohackers and transhumanists believe that implanted devices can genuinely improve our daily lives in practical ways. Though it may sound like science fiction, here are a few examples of how implanted tech could aid humans - look away now if you're faint of heart! Some active biohackers have implanted RFID chips under their skin, usually between the thumb and forefinger, that can be scanned to unlock doors, log into computers, share contact information, and more. While remembering passwords and keys can be a hassle, having an implanted chip may take convenience to the next level. Proponents argue that RFID implants aren't tracking devices, but simply access tools voluntarily chosen. Magnets implanted in fingertips provide a "sixth sense" of feeling magnetic and electromagnetic fields around you. Biohackers claim this allo...

Restoring Old Classic Cars to Perfection

Image
Restoring a classic car to its full former glory is a uniquely romantic endeavour for auto aficionados. These rolling antiques are iconic time capsules that capture the essence of style, culture, and engineering from past eras. As many of my car-loving friends would agree, vintage automobiles represent a class of antique like no other. Each car has its own iconic silhouette, gleaming chrome, and roaring engine that makes it a driving work of art. That's why I admire the meticulous work of this restoration shop so much. They take rusty, dilapidated classics that look ready for the scrap heap and painstakingly bring them back to perfection. Even as someone who isn't necessarily a car buff, it's incredibly satisfying to see them transform a decrepit old clunker into a vehicle that looks ready for display in an art museum. The level of care and attention to detail they devote to each car is astonishing. The restored interiors look factory-fresh, while the bodywork's elegant...

Tesla and its batteries

Image
Tesla's plans to roll out large-scale, cost-effective batteries seem to have captured the public's imagination - even beyond tech circles. Increasingly, people from all walks of life mention these ambitious batteries to me and the potential impact they could have. Just the other day, a couple local school teachers brought up Tesla's future batteries unprompted. They aren't potential investors or tech industry folks either. Yet they had clearly heard about and were excited by Tesla's battery developments. To me, this shows how successfully Tesla has marketed its battery vision and Roadmap, building public awareness years before the technology is commercially viable. Whether it's the promise of enabling wide-scale home solar storage or stabilizing power grids with massive battery farms, people seem to have bought into the ideas. Of course, Tesla still has to deliver on its bold claims and prices to truly transform renewable energy storage. But the company has alre...

Upcoming Challenges for Retail Banks

Image
There is a genuine sense that our high street big banks are about to enter a new era (unwittingly for some) where the old and tested retail banking model is due for a dramatic (and painful) shake-up. Sadly, this comes just as our banks are about to recover from the recent financial crisis, and many see traditional prudent retail banking as the way forward. Peer-to-peer lending  is coming. I came across this term recently and was shocked (in a good way) by this idea. It is very simple: peer-to-peer lending matches people with money to those who need it, bypassing the bank altogether. And because the bank is not involved, the rates for both the lender and the borrower can be better than they can get from the bank.   This is a brilliant idea, enabled by the Internet age. Only now can we seamlessly match lenders and borrowers in the masses efficiently, quickly and (safely?). And in case you haven't noticed, the idea is based on  not  having the banks involved. A s...
