10 Things AI Can Never Do for You

Image
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world, but it cannot replace the irreplaceable: the human experience. While AI can assist, automate, and optimize many aspects of life, it cannot live your life for you. Here are ten things AI can never truly do for you. 1. Living Life First-hand AI doesn’t savour the journey, celebrate hard-earned victories, or feel the emotional weight of a meaningful story. It can win games and solve puzzles, but it cannot experience the thrill of achievement or the sting of failure. These moments are yours alone to live and feel. 2. Connecting with Human Emotions AI can analyse emotions and predict reactions, but it doesn’t feel. It cannot truly understand the depth of human joy, sorrow, or passion. Emotions are deeply personal, and only humans can share and connect through them. 3. Experiencing the Essence of Art AI can create art and analyse its technical aspects, but it cannot grasp the cultural, historical, or emotional layers that make art meani...

Charity Begins with Excelling in Your Own Role

Image
When we think of charity, our minds often go to grand gestures: donating to a cause, volunteering our time, or helping those in immediate need. These acts are undeniably important, but there is another form of charity that is often overlooked- doing our work well. It may seem counterintuitive at first to connect earning a living with acts of kindness, but when we reflect on the broader impact of our work, we realize that it’s deeply tied to benefiting others. The Misconception About Work Many of us view our daily jobs as far removed from the realm of altruism. The routines, the deadlines, and the need to earn money can make work feel mundane or even selfish. But this perspective overlooks a simple truth: when we do our jobs well, we’re providing value to others. Whether you’re a teacher educating future generations, a software developer building tools people rely on, or a barista making someone’s morning coffee, your work contributes to the needs and well-being of others. At its core, ...

More Income = Less Happiness?

Image
The Income Paradox: Why More Money Might Lead to Less Happiness   In a world driven by the pursuit of financial success, it's easy to assume that more income naturally leads to greater happiness. After all, money can buy comfort, security, and opportunities. However, numerous studies and real-world experiences suggest that the relationship between income and happiness is not as straightforward as it seems. In fact, more money can sometimes lead to less happiness. Here's why: 1. The Hedonic Treadmill Effect The concept of the "hedonic treadmill" describes how people quickly return to a stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative changes in their lives. When we receive a raise or land a high-paying job, the initial happiness boost is often temporary. Over time, our expectations and desires increase along with our income, leading us to seek even more wealth to maintain the same level of satisfaction. This constant chase can be exhausting and ultimately u...

Life: To Experience and To Explore

Image
Life isn't about reaching a destination. It's about the journey itself - experiencing all that the world has to offer and continually exploring new horizons.  Every day presents opportunities for novel experiences, whether big or small. It could be trying a new cuisine, visiting an unfamiliar place, or simply taking a different route to work. These experiences shape us, broaden our perspectives, and add richness to our lives. Exploration goes hand-in-hand with experience. It's about maintaining curiosity, asking questions, and seeking and digesting the answers. Exploring could mean delving into a new subject, understanding different cultures, or pushing personal boundaries. It's through exploration that we grow and evolve as individuals. The beauty of viewing life as a series of experiences and explorations is that it shifts our focus from outcomes to the present moment. Instead of fixating on goals, we learn to appreciate the journey itself. Each experience becomes val...

The Differences Between Heroes and Saints, How It Affects Politics and All of Us

Image
Heroes and Saints In the rich tapestry of human archetypes, heroes and saints often emerge as central figures, each embodying distinct roles within society. The contrast between these two types has been a subject of philosophical and cultural discourse across civilizations. When we examine heroes and saints through the lens of their conquests, we quickly discover that these conquests differ significantly in nature. A Hero's External Conquests Traditionally, heroes are celebrated for their ability to conquer external challenges. They are figures of immense courage and capability, often rising in times of conflict or need to lead and fight. The hero's journey is predominantly outward-facing - engaging in battles, overcoming tangible obstacles, and achieving feats that often serve the collective needs of society or a community. This reflects the hero’s drive to impact the world externally, often changing the course of history through their actions. However, this outward conquest c...

Not in Pursuit of Happiness

Image
There is only doing what is needed.. I recently watched this inspiring and thought-provoking YouTube clip about the laws of attraction. I wanted to note down a few points of what I learned after listening to this brief exchange. Of course, these are just my notes, and they are not advice for anyone else. You should listen to the conversation and take from it what is useful to you.  The video is in English, and the channel added Chinese subtitles to try and reach a wider audience. Laws of attraction Not quite, but you can determine your destiny - you will likely get closer to what you set your mind to do. However, things may not always turn out as hoped. Even if you get 90% of what you wanted, most people will still focus on the missing 10% and suffer for it. You are part of the universe That was an interesting moment in the conversation- to realise you are a part of the universe, not outside it or having to attract it. You are it, one and the same. We cannot control all external fo...

Travel is figuring out your options as you go

Image
Traveling often requires figuring out your options as you go, a realization that I recently came across in a YouTube commercial that resonated with me. Being an avid traveler, I've often wondered why being on the road makes me feel more inspired and alive. I attribute it to the excitement and thrill of making decisions on the fly, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem at first. Admittedly, this can also be exhausting at times, but my travels have been some of the most inspiring moments of my life. Often, I'm inspired to make significant changes while traveling, such as reshaping my future, changing my career path, or even renovating my home. However, the sad truth is, typically only a fraction of the inspiration Stick with me once back home. Returning home to familiarity is often a drag; everything can become monotonous. I know where to catch the next bus and what I'll have for lunch. So it's safe to say that spontaneity is probably the key to rekindling th...

What Gaming Taught Me About Life

Image
For all the young gamer out there Lately, after completing my professional qualification, I’ve had more time to pursue my hobbies and gaming has been one of my favorites. I find it both stimulating and relaxing to experience different worlds and challenges. I also believe that gaming in moderation has some real-life benefits. For example, it can teach problem-solving skills, teamwork, and creativity. These are all skills that can be applied to other areas of life, such as work and school. I believe that successful gamers can transfer these gaming skills and mindsets to other areas of life. Follow my channel , I need subscribers! In Games, the Objective (Quests) Are Well Defined If you play video games, you probably know what objectives and side quests are. They are the goals that guide you throughout the game in the game world. In his book “Winners and how they succeed”, Alistair Campbell explains how having a clear objective is the key to success in any field. As a gamer, you would ha...

(Stop) Finding Purpose In Life

Image
What is your ‘Why’? I discovered Simon Sinek’s work a decade ago while searching for ways to help the organisation that I worked for define itself. His ideas about  finding the ‘why’  were impactful and illuminating. It’s fascinating to see that these ideas have resonated with not only businesses but also individuals in their personal lives. Most of us struggle to articulate our purpose Finding your purpose is a simple yet profound idea. However, most of us struggle to articulate what our purpose is. To me, this is the crucial step before setting goals and making plans in life. Why do we do what we do? As I have written in another post about achieving success in life, Alistair Campbell’s book “ Winners and How They Succeed ” provides a useful roadmap for having goals, strategies, and tactics. But before setting any goals, it’s essential to figure out the “why.” Why are you setting these objectives in the first place? This is the missing piece of the puzzle that c...

How to Make Hard Choices

Image
This is yet another great TED video that I wish I had seen a long time ago. The lessons on making hard choices: why is it so difficult to make what we perceive to be 'difficult' choices? If the choices are difficult to make, then perhaps none of them is better or worse than the other; if it's easy to tell which is better, then it wouldn't be difficult. We can't judge the intangibles with quantifiable measurements, and we should not make choices by trying to compare which one is 'better'. Sometimes there are no better answers, only what we prefer and what makes us feel 'right'. It is when faced with difficult choices that we show who we truly are. And we become who we are by making those difficult choices. I have learned something rather useful today :) Hope it inspires you too. ********* Do you use wifi in public places or travel abroad often? Do you worry about cyber security? What can be done about Food Waste?

Image
This BBC business report shows some staggering statistics of how much food is being wasted globally. And apart from household waste, a lot of food actually never made it to our fridge. It is encouraging to see individual farmers partnering with local charities or businesses to make use of perfectly edible produce which were excluded by supermarkets due to less than perfect appearances. Charities and environmental agencies should actively pursue this type of win-win ideas. It is a brilliant policy (although it could take sometime for restaurants to get used to) to require New York City's restaurants stop sending food waste to landfills in 2015 and encourage the use of alternative operations. However, I do hope that restaurant businesses are not financially worse off because of these new requirements. If anything, corresponding environmental policies should ensure it is not more expensive or difficult in any way to send waste to these alternative operations. The project ...

Product Lifespan and Consumerism

Image
I like the fact that every now and then there will be a preachy documentary or TV program that reminds us how wasteful we are - because we tend to forget. This BBC2 program 'Men that made us spend' asks some very valid questions. The companies of this world have become very good at creating, producing and making a profit. However, there doesn't seem to be enough economic incentives to complete the product life cycle loop, one that includes converting obsolete products back to usable raw materials. To the extent that usable older products that are still in boxes that have never been opened are being thrown away. Why? I don't blame people for wanting to buy things, but if the world is going to operate under this model then surely we also need satisfactory solutions to deal with its weaknesses for it to be sustainable. Is there a missing component in our modern economies? Is it due to lack of the technologies required? I have heard that it's more expensive to r...

A life of purpose

Image
Following the previous discussion on "purpose", I also found this talk online that is quite inspiring and made a lot of sense. The examples given are related to Christianity but the underlying topic is relevant to us all. What we believe in ultimately determines what we do. What is life to you? Go to work, come home, family, watch TV, go to bed, go to work, come home, family, watch TV, go to bed, go to parties on weekends... at what point do you realize that you are actually bored of this? Surely there is more to life than this. We can have a better sense of "purpose" if we figure out what we are supposed to do in life. We are hard wired differently. Each of us have different skills, different abilities, strengths and weaknesses. There are some things that we can do with ease and enjoy doing, that others would find strenuous or unappealing. What is YOURs? We are also each given different cards in life, some are more fortunate than others. What do you have a...

Learn your life's purpose in the next 5 minutes..

Image
How many people do you know that are seemingly successful in life, but they are just not happy? Does money bring joy, if in the process of earning that money you had to give away a part of your soul or it comes as the result of creating more problems in our world rather than helping to solve them? Do you feel you deserve what you have? To be truly happy, one should have an understanding of their "purpose". Are you able to answer those questions? - Who you are?  (Going beyond your name, it helps to know what you are about as a person.) - What you do? (At this moment, what is the one thing that you feel that you are qualified to teach others?) - Who do you do it for? - What those people want and need? - How they change as the result of your effort? These questions were extracted from the video that I will show you below. It is rather interesting that more than half of the above questions are about others rather than yourself. Perhaps as human beings, we...

Positive psychology - be happier and work better

Image
This is a very funny talk. It was like listening to stand up comedy instead of a lecture. The underlying message is a very powerful one though. Among other things, it talks about the importance of positivity in our happiness level and which in turn affects our performance at work. Help to spread happiness by sharing this short video. Have fun finding your own "happiness advantage".

The Necessity of Death

Image
A simple film triggered everything I went to watch the Robocop the other day and came out of the movie theater in a rather strange mood. In the story it showed the greed of a company and the strayed  ambition of a CEO overshadowing the good of human nature and the fate of the small family of Alex Murphy. Sometimes people get so lost in their little jobs and start to forget that no matter how much profit their work was generating, it is still just a job. To lose one's soul and the basic human decency for something so trivial just doesn't seem to be worth it. Personally I would prefer to live in a better world if it only costs a few billions (in term of missed improper business opportunities) to get there.   In some rare cases, individuals abuses their power and influence in society and are seemingly unstoppable. In the Robocop film, the story changed when these individuals died. And this bring us to the main topic of this post - the importance and the necessi...

Fighting Crime with Data and Analytics

Image
Number talks, and statistics can help us see patterns and make more informed decisions. How do you make decisions if you can't even process all the information that is available to you?  This is why I believe Data Science matters, in almost all area of life. By collecting and processing the data available, the trends and patterns can be very revealing. It can help us see the inefficiencies and mistakes within our working systems and improve how we do things. However, I think this particular topic warrants its own particular warnings. when it comes to crime and justice, one must remember that statistics is just what it is - a number, the average, the trend, an indicator. It cannot and should not be used to predict what an individual will choose to do. If we go as far as arresting people based on the future probabilities that they will commit a crime, then we have robbed society and citizens of our world the basic right of being able to choose and be responsible for our ...
