Charity Begins with Excelling in Your Own Role

Image
When we think of charity, our minds often go to grand gestures: donating to a cause, volunteering our time, or helping those in immediate need. These acts are undeniably important, but there is another form of charity that is often overlooked- doing our work well. It may seem counterintuitive at first to connect earning a living with acts of kindness, but when we reflect on the broader impact of our work, we realize that it’s deeply tied to benefiting others. The Misconception About Work Many of us view our daily jobs as far removed from the realm of altruism. The routines, the deadlines, and the need to earn money can make work feel mundane or even selfish. But this perspective overlooks a simple truth: when we do our jobs well, we’re providing value to others. Whether you’re a teacher educating future generations, a software developer building tools people rely on, or a barista making someone’s morning coffee, your work contributes to the needs and well-being of others. At its core, ...

Marcus Aurelius: The Philosopher Roman Emperor

Image
Marcus Aurelius is one of history's most celebrated figures, known not only as a Roman emperor but also as a profound philosopher. His thoughts, captured in his personal writings called Meditations, continue to inspire people worldwide, offering timeless wisdom on how to live a meaningful and virtuous life. But why is Marcus Aurelius so famous, and what are the key ideas that make his philosophy so enduring? Who is Marcus Aurelius? A Philosopher King: Marcus Aurelius ruled as Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 AD, a time marked by significant challenges, including wars and plagues. Despite these pressures, he is remembered for his calm, rational leadership and his ability to balance the demands of ruling an empire with the pursuit of philosophy. His reign is often seen as the pinnacle of the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace and stability in the Roman Empire. Author of Meditations : His personal journal, Meditations, was never intended for publication but has become one of the mo...

The Most Important Thing That Young People Should Do

Image
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a Batman exhibition that was not only fascinating but also rekindled my long-standing interest in the Dark Knight. Batman has always been a compelling character -steeped in darkness, driven by tragedy, and guided by an unwavering sense of justice. Batman's story resonates deeply with the theme of identity, particularly in the context of his complicated relationship with his son, Damian, as portrayed in the animated film Batman vs. Robin. In Batman vs. Robin, the relationship between Bruce Wayne (Batman) and his biological son, Damian, is complex and fraught with tension. Damian, like many young people, is in the midst of figuring out who he is. This process of self-discovery is difficult, made even more so by the towering expectations placed on him by his parents and grandfather. The film poignantly captures Damian's struggle to define himself in the shadow of his family's legacy- a struggle that, in many ways, mirrors our own journ...

Acumen Fund: Building Sustainable Impact Through Investments, Not Grants

Image
A Different Approach to Philanthropy In a world where traditional charity often falls short of creating lasting change, innovative models are emerging to address social issues more sustainably. One such model is championed by Acumen Fund, which uses patient capital investments instead of grants to foster sustainable development. This approach not only drives long-term impact but also empowers communities with dignity. Why Investments Over Grants? Acumen Fund’s unique strategy of using patient capital investments over traditional grants is a game-changer in the philanthropic world. Unlike grants, which are often short-term and can create dependency, patient capital investments are designed to be long-term, allowing social enterprises to grow and become self-sufficient. Additionally, the original invested capital can be recovered from successful projects and then used to fund more innovative ideas in the future. This approach ensures that the impact of the investment is sustainable, as i...

A "Free" Way to Plant More Trees

Image
Ecosia: Planting Trees with Every Search In today's world, where environmental concerns are at the forefront, finding simple yet impactful ways to contribute to sustainability can make a significant difference. One such innovative approach is using Ecosia, a web search engine that allows you to plant trees at no cost, simply by doing what you already do every day, browsing the internet. What is Ecosia? Ecosia is a search engine that works just like any other search engine, such as Google or Bing. However, the key difference lies in its mission and business model. Ecosia uses the revenue generated from search ads to fund tree-planting projects around the world. Founded in 2009 by Christian Kroll, Ecosia's goal is to plant one billion trees, and they are well on their way to achieving this target. How Does Ecosia Work? Every time you perform a search on Ecosia, the search engine generates ad revenue. This revenue is then used to fund tree-planting initiatives in biodiversity hots...

QR codes for the homeless - Greater Change

Image
Homelessness is a growing problem in some of our major cities. The problem of donating to the homeless was one of the things I have wondered about recently. Local authorities tend to take the view that people can access available services if they need them, so there are no reasons why someone should be rough-sleeping in the streets. They also urge people not to give cash to the homeless directly, as it will keep rough-sleepers in the streets rather than encouraging homeless people to find help from statutory or voluntary sector services. In reality, the system is far from perfect and it's not always that simple. Without opening a discussion on all the reasons why someone may still end up in the streets, I was wondering about the act of donating cash itself. How do you distinguish between people that genuinely need your help and the professional beggars? How do you stop your money being spent on cigarettes or drugs? These thoughts usually put me off giving any money at all, I w...

GiveWell - Effective Altruism

Image
If you are keen on philanthropy, I would recommend that you take a look at  givewell.org/ Have you ever wondered which charities are more effective in terms of how they use your donations? How do you compare a good cause against the other? Should you donate to fund a project closer to home or abroad? GiveWell is an organisation that does some of this research. They also give suggestions on what to look out for before you decide who to donate to. If you care deeply about this line of work and would like to read more about it, an excellent book is  Doing Good Better: How Effective Altruism Can Help You Make a Difference. If you know any other useful references regarding this topic, please share them below. I would be interested to hear any other recommendations.
