Review of Boosteroid Cloud Gaming Service (2024 Review)

What is Boosteroid?

Boosteroid is a cloud gaming service similar to GeForce Now. Instead of requiring a powerful computer to play high-end games, Boosteroid lets you stream them directly to your device (e.g. using an old laptop as long as you have a fast and stable internet connection). This means you can play on PCs, laptops, tablets, even phones, without having to buy an expensive devices, gaming consoles, or worrying about downloads, updates, or storage space.

Boasting a library of hundreds of titles, Boosteroid focuses on giving you access to the games you already own on platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store. This is a key difference from some competitors who require separate game purchases within their service.  With a stable 15mbps internet connection, you can experience smooth gameplay at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.

Unlike general cloud PC services such as Shadow Computing, Boosteroid focuses on gaming and boasts significantly lower costs.  A standard monthly subscription comes in under 10 euros, with even deeper discounts for 12-month plans.

Beyond affordability and accessibility, Boosteroid emphasizes user-friendliness. There are no session time limits, so you can delve into games for as long as your subscription is active. Plus, their customer support is available 24/7 in case you encounter any issues.

Flexible and Easy to Use

Subscribing to Boosteroid grants immediate access to your Steam library, allowing you to play supported titles directly through the platform.  This eliminates the need to pre-download or install games.  More importantly, potential subscribers can  verify game availability through Boosteroid's library search function before committing to a subscription.  This transparency and the flexibility of  month-to-month plans with one-month cancellation options ensure you only pay for what you use. This eliminates the financial burden of expensive hardware that might become unused during busy periods.

I have used Boosteroid to play the latest titles such as Hogwarts Legacy and Gotham Knights. New titles are being added very frequently. A close collaboration with Xbox has also been announced recently.

Cloud is the Future (probably)

The rise of high-speed fiber internet is fueling the viability of cloud gaming.  The convenience of playing anywhere, anytime, without the hefty upfront cost of a high-end PC or console, makes cloud services a compelling future for gaming.

A growing subscriber base is key.  As more players embrace cloud gaming, subscription costs can potentially remain competitive while platforms gain resources to enhance their capabilities and game libraries.  This rapid development could position Sony's PS5 and Xbox Series X as the final console generation.  In the near future, everyone can access games without needing a home console, freeing manufacturers to focus solely on crafting exceptional gaming experiences.

Top Tip: Use Boosteroid's network connection test (on the top right corner of the home page) to test your connection to the nearest servers before you subscribe.

Problems With Boosteroid

A review wouldn't be complete without addressing Boosteroid's current challenges. Since joining last year, I've witnessed significant progress in their service. Previously, connecting during peak hours (evenings and weekends) proved frustrating, you can spend hours just trying to connect to the servers. To address this, Boosteroid then implemented a queuing system, displaying your position and estimated wait time. While still less convenient than booting up a PlayStation, at least the constant clicking attempts were eliminated.

Thankfully, queuing hasn't been necessary in recent days. I can usually connect and access games with minimal wait time in recent weeks. However, lagging or latency remains my primary concern about Boosteroid. A symbol on the right side of the screen turns yellow or red when the connection becomes unstable. For gamers, especially those who record/stream sessions or play multi-player, this can be incredibly frustrating as it significantly impacts the gaming experience.

Here is an example of the problem and what the recorded video would look like when connection to Boosteroid fluctuates 😭

Boosteroid should invest in tools to ensure robust connection stability, and I hope that they can address this issue swiftly. Otherwise, the platform might not be suitable for streamers or other more serious gamers. After all, quality of the stream to user's screen is what they are selling, and they must get this right.

Summary

Boosteroid offers a compelling alternative for gamers on a budget, with its low subscription fees and the convenience of playing directly through your existing game library. While connection stability and lag pose current challenges, particularly for streamers, the platform has demonstrably improved in recent months. If Boosteroid can overcome these remaining hurdles, its attractive pricing should entice more gamers, especially those still undecided whether to buy a next-gen console or simply looking for a temporary solution to play a specific title.
