Gratitude Diary Day 12: Refund

I finally got a refund for a cruise trip I booked about two years ago. The chances weren't looking good. I was concerned they might still go ahead with the trip against public health guidelines. Glad they made the right decision. The Mediterranean trip will have to wait till another time. I will not be comfortable travelling abroad this year. Even with the UK vaccine and better immunity, we can still carry the virus to others, or worse, interact with it often enough to allow it to adapt quicker than it would otherwise. It would then be back to lockdown until the new vaccine can be produced. That isn't a sensible long-term solution to me.

The solution is preventing external cases from entering the country, i.e. using effective quarantine. That means a range of designated hotel options for foreign visitors, strict police-enforced track and trace, and heavy penalties for violations for British people returning and quarantining at home. The quarantine allows the time it takes for symptoms to show and cut the virus off from the general population. As a result, the whole country can return to school, work, and take holidays in the UK. After that, the government would only need to focus on supporting international tourism and the aviation industries.

A friend of mine that went to teach in China had to quarantine at a hotel for two weeks upon arriving at the airport and then self-isolate/work from home for another two weeks before they were allowed to return to work. China recovered and grew 6% economically last year since recovering from lockdown. Similar policies are also effective in New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan. There is no reason why we can't do it in the UK. Even if the government pays for the quarantine hotel fees, it would still only be a small fraction compared to all the other costly covid measures we have seen. #covid19 #quarantine
I hope those in charge will look at the example set by other countries and make the right decisions.

Day 12: I am grateful for the resilience that life has taught me, having been through some difficult times in the past. It has lessened the impact this lockdown has on me. I hope that other will also find their inner resilience and remain productive. #GratitudeDiary #GratitudeChallenge
