Google Glass and Augmented Reality
Google has now unveiled features of its Google Glass, a wearable glasses that does a lot of clever stuff.
Augmented
reality is definitely the way forward. Already with our Smart Phones,
we use technology to complement more and more aspects of our lives. But
taking out the phone from your pocket to check the map, to look up a
restaurant, to surf the Internet or to take a picture is still a clumsy
process. The device is very detached and we need to look for it when we
need to use it. Which is why a wearable glasses that can provide some of
the Smart Phone functions real time may be desirable.
Having
said that, any glasses wearer would tell you it is not a piece of
accessory that they would choose to wear, given a choice. It is not so
convenient when doing sports, and historically glasses have not done
well as a fashionable item. I can see people wear these devices for work
or when at home. It would be more challenging to convince people to wear one of these when going out shopping, clubbing...etc.
In
the long term, and there is a strong suspicion that this technology
probably already exists, a contact lens version of this technology may
proof to be more popular, In any case, augmented reality will really
bring a futuristic feel to our society. Imagine you can have "the Terminator" type information streamed to you as you look at your surroundings (can you imagine
looking at a piano and you can see just where to press to play the tune
of a particular song?, suddenly you are an amateur piano player!), the
future is here, and the transformation it brings to our society will be
incredible.
