Change file extension/ file type in Windows 7

You may have come across this problem before. You have just downloaded a file but your computer does not recognise it, possibly due to unknown extension of the file. You tried to change the file name and add a .xxx on to change the extension but it doesn't work? Well, it happened to me 5 minutes ago.

The problem is that file extensions are hidden most of the time. The .xxx name change is being interpreted as part of the file name rather than the actual extension. To do this I had to first revel the file extensions.

1. Open up any folder.

2. At the top left corner, click on "Organize"> Folder and search options > View
3. Un-tick "Hide Extension for known file types".

You should now see all the file extensions of all the files on your computer. You can then change this to .rar or .zip ... according to your need.

Can't believe I forgot how to do this..., good that I have it written down now..lol
