Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

Did a little search, it seems that UK and nationals of 36 participating citizens can travel using the Visa Waiver Program (VMP). Here are some of the details, for more information, check out the VWP website.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables nationals of 36 participating countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. The list of participating countries changes from time to time, currently these are:

In some special cases, this scheme may not be applicable to some travellers from the eligible countries. VWP eligible travelers may still apply for a traditional visa, if they prefer to do so.

ESTA - Electronic System for Travel Authorization

VWP travelers are required to have a valid authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to travel, are screened at the port of entry into the United States, and are enrolled in the Department of Homeland Security’s US-VISIT program.

This was actually quite simple to do. It only took me 15 minutes. You will need your personal details, travel details and a credit card for the process fee (14 US $).

After entering your details, you will be prompt to pay and submit the request. You will get a authorization confirmation once your payment is successful.

Overall, the process was easy and quick, but this authorization does not guarantee you entry into the US, you will still go through the checks at the border once you have arrived.

Glad to share useful information. Although bear in mind that I applied in 2012, there may have been changes or additional requirements since then, do make sure to check the ESTA website for updated information.

I was given a 2 years authorization. Used the same document again in 2013 without any problems.
